Textual Analysis Of A Teaser Trailer: The Crazies| JOSHUA ADERINOLA

Release Date: 26 February 2010 (UK)
Directed By: Breck Eisner

The teaser opens with a brief anacourage of the film institutions which created the trailer, “Overture Films” and “Participant Media”, non-diegetic sound of a loud bang such as a drum kick as the anacourage is shown otherwise known as sync sound. This may have been done so that the teaser can capture the audience straight away through the loud bang. Sync Sound is then used to transition in the next shot. Which is of a female character shot in a low key lighting medium shot, the setting of the shot seems to be in a hospital because she is on a bed, her costume is a white hospital garm this helps give the audience more confidence to believe she is in the hospital. But the audience are not sure what type of hospital she is in because she may be in a mental health hospital because we can see she is being tied down.

The character then speaks and says “Is this really happening?” this creates an enigma for the audience because they do not know what the character is talking about this helps attracts the audience’s attention because they would want to know what the character is speaking about.

A straight cut is then used to show the first anacourage “Before Our Lives End”, written in white on top of a black background, the anacourage gives the audience a sense that the film is about death, the anacourage is shown very briefly, a straight cut is used to show a close up of a keyhole with a key inside opening the door, with diegetic sound of the door being unlocked which help creates the tension for the audience because they do not know what is going to happen next. The next shot is a cut to another close up shot of the female character trying to open a door but through her facial expressions we can she that she is struggling because the door seems to be locked, the use of diegetic sound of the girl breathing heavily helps create the sense of trouble and danger.

The editing technique continuity editing is used because the shot can be interpreted into two ways. One interpretation of the two shots is someone has locked the door and the girl is trying to open the locked door and escape. Another interpretation of the shots is the girl has unlocked the door and is struggling to get out but she is still not able to get out. This is a good technique to use because this means the audience are left in the blank thinking what’s happening which could increase the audience’s interest in the film.

The next shot is medium close shot in low key lightning of a male character holding a lighter and looking down at something, the use of the editing technique elliptical editing is then used to show what the character is looking at, the shot also explains why he is holding the lighter. The shot shows a trail of fire leading towards a door, the use of non-diegetic sound of a low keyed stringed instrument being played helps create the tension for the scene because the audience are not sure if the fire is leading up to the door where the girl is locked inside from the previous shots, this helps build the anxiety for the audience because would want to know who is in the room. As the camera zooms into the door sync sound of the low keyed string instrument is used, for when the camera begins to zoom into the door the sync sound becomes louder and fuller. This is a good technique to use because the audience then start to become worried because they are not sure if it is the girl who is behind the door. Before the shot finishes we see the door knob of the moving as if someone is trying to open it from the other side. Which the audience saw the girl trying to do in the earlier shots.

The next shot is another anacourage, “Before Our Cities Are Taken Over”, it is the same as the first anacourage it is written in a white colour. The next shot is an Ariel shot of an Army Base, the use of various props are used to help create the atmosphere of an army base such as helicopters, trucks, buses etc. The use of non-diegetic sound of an evacuation alarm helps create the sense of danger for the audience because they do not know what is going to happen next.

In the next few shots of the trailer they were all quick cuts which would help create a buzz for the trailer because the shots did not show alot of the film but also did not show to less of the action parts. In this section of the 14 shots were shown in 10 seconds. On the right are some of the shots.

The non-diegetic sound for all these shots is just the same alarm horn which was used in the previous shot but as the cuts between the shots become more frequent the alarm begins to become louder and gains a higher pitch this helps create the tension.
The last scene in the trailer is set in a baseball field in high key lighting compared to the beginning of the trailer when all the shots were low key lighting. This can be said to be a contrast in the film because the anacourage before the baseball field read “It all began here”, this could connote that in the beginning all was well but as the film progressed on their began to be to problems in the film. Which shows the reason why they may have used the contrast from light and dark, to help create the dark mysterious atmosphere.

There are two men shot in a medium shot, dressed in security uniforms we see one the men pointing at something in the distance, then editing technique of eyeline match is used to show what they are looking at. The audience is then shown long shot of a man, dressed in a janitors cloak holding some sort of weapon.
The shot then changes to a shot of a cup of coffee being dropped on the floor. This creates an enigma for the audience because they are not sure what has happened, because it is the same cup of coffee which was being drank by one of the security guards.
