Textual Analysis Of A Film Poster| Total Film JOCELYN ASEA

1.       The Maskhead is visually captivating and branding; the appearance of the text resembles a micro-chip, which is most commonly found within electrical devices today.  The Font is bold, a statement that perhaps represents the advanced level of technology that will be seen in the film ‘Inception’ that is being advertised on the magazine cover.  The Maskhead is highly recognisable and unique, notice how the title raises above the background that is highly similar to the design of the text, only that the lighting is more low key, whereby the Maskhead is high key, for emphasis, which in effect draws the attention of audiences.  It is highly significant to note that the title of the magazine cover is; Total Film, rather than ‘film’.  We are given the impression ‘film’ is the name of the magazine cover, as the text is bolded, uses a large font and has been specially designed to appear complex and technical like the inside of a electrical device.  ‘Total’ is bolded by uses a different font colour to the ‘film’ text and the font is basic; possibly ‘Arial’. This is again done to place emphasize the Maskhead and the fact that it is a film magazine.
2.       The Left third indicates the sections of the magazine that is vital for sales in shops, if the magazine is not shown ‘full-frontage’ and is what is most recognisable amongst other magazines competing for space, for that the Maskhead and Coverlines.
3.       This is the release date of the magazine cover and also indicates the issue number. This essential for audiences, so as to keep up to date with the latest film releases or recent changes in the film industry.  Notice that, the release date information is hidden underneath the title and is of a smaller font to the other text on the cover, this was perhaps done to place emphasis on the sections of the magazine cover that are captivating e.g. the actor, Maskhead and Coverlines.
4.       The website allows its audience to find out further information about film online, give feedback and enquire. The benefit of this is that you immediately appeal to wider audiences and possibly niche audiences.
5.       The denotation of the main image is of a middle aged man, dressed in a black suit, holding a light device, hence the beam of light coming from the device he is holding in his right hand.  Notice the man, appears low key; the light is coming in from one direction, for that above his head from left. This therefore creates shadow on the side of his body that is away from the light, where it is limited; his suit appears like a silhouette. This may have been done to make the man appear sinister, cold and compelling, his presence almost chilling, the man’s costume also adds to his presence.  Note that the actor is not looking at the camera, but away from it, his attention is diverted, perhaps this has been done for suspense, to create mystery as if something as caught the attention of the actor, and he is captured frozen in time.
6.       All magazine covers use Coverlines, which are often arranged surrounding the main image without detracting it, this magazine cover therefore supports the typical conventions of film magazine covers. Notice that main Coverlines are mostly used rather than Coverline which are normally shown a smaller font. This was perhaps done to draw the attention of audiences; the large font leaps out of the page, it can be seen clearly and is short, sharp and simple, often a word is used to summarise i.e. ‘Predators’ and ‘Inception’.
7.       The selling line is short and a sharp description of a titles main marketing point of the film ‘inception’.  It is a linguistic; we should not take the phrase literally but understand that it is referring to exploring the brain and the mind, the ‘ultimate’ journey within the mind.
8.       The main Coverline; inception is most dominant on the cover; it is quite literally the center of attention. This was deliberately done to let audience know that this issue is regarding the release of the film; inception.
9.       The text dividers have been used to place emphasise on the main Coverlines; in terms of what is in this issue.  Notice how the lines are aligned to fit the shape of the actor’s legs, this in effect places emphasis on the background and organises the layout of the text on the page.
10.   The colour of the background, follows the theme of deep blue, white, metallic silver and black. The background appears misty, the precipitation appears to be snow; the season of winter. This in effect supports the chilling presence of the actor.  Notice the background changes from the actors legs to above his head. The buildings are seen as an Ariel-view from the sky, perhaps this is done to create a 3D futuristic effect. Also notice that the actor is much larger than the background, this makes it seem as though the actor has travelled a far distance.
